Avon has been conducting an anti communism campaign in Costa Rica. Avon's director claimed responsibility for the pamphlets, and said it was just an attempt at opening up the discussion of democracy. The pamphlets that were inserted in the regular Avon catalogs had, written in bold print, "OUR FAMILIES AND BUSINESSES ARE IN DANGER", on top of the Costa Rican flag, with "Say No Communism" at the bottom. The rest of the text takes opposition against the Broad Front political parties presidential candidate Jose Maria Villalta. The goal - make him appear as undesirable as Hugo Chavez.
I found this article interesting because of the talk of communism within it. When we talk about communism in America, it sounds close to a curse word. Foreign and scary. But in Costa RIca, there is actual support for Communism. In fact, the man, Villalta, who is being warned against by anticommunist, is actually being criticized by the true communists for not being radical enough.
This is relevant to Costa Rican politics because it discusses the political parities and people involved in elections there. It also is relevant because of Avon's political actions against communism.
